Love At First Sight

I found this gigantic framed art
at the thrift store. It was love at first sight.
Not with the artwork.
It was the beautiful frame.
I removed the art
and took out my trusty spray paint.
Surprised? It's not black.
I used Caramel Latte metallic
to cover the gold.
Once dry, I brushed over the frame with
diluted brown paint, then rubbed off the
high spots to give it the appearance of age
and show off the details.
I adore the look of
my giant empty frame
leaning against the wall.
And it does a great job
hiding the lamp cord too.

Taking It For Granite

Did you notice my kitchen counter tops
when I posted this picture?Did you think we paid the "big bucks"
to have
solid granite counters installed?
We did not.
Hubby and I installed the counter tops ourselves.
We did the back splash too. We used granite tiles. We just laid them as close together as possible
and then filled in the tiny gaps with unsanded grout.
Unless you look really close, you can't tell
the difference between solid granite and tiles.
But our pocket book could tell.
And if you're wondering about the bull-nose trim.
I bought it from the thrift store.
Three dollars for a box filled
with enough to do our entire kitchen.

On A Silver Roll

Since I am on a roll of sharing ideas
for displaying silverware,
I thought I'd share another.
I found this little spoon at the thrift store.
As you can see, it has an initial "J" on the handle.
I knew that with a little work it would make
the perfect pendant.

My hubby cut the spoon using a hack saw,
then filed the cut edge smooth.
Next he used pliers to turn the cut end under.
I simply strung a chain through the opening
and now I have
a unique monogram necklace
.

A Very Special Thank You

Last week a dear woman presented me with a wonderful thank you gift. I was thrilled to receive these three pieces of silverware. I wanted to keep these pieces together as a constant reminder of the thoughtful gift and the woman who gave it. I found an inexpensive faux silver tray, the kind you buy at the dollar store. I pulled out a piece of scrapbook paper reminiscent of vintage wallpaper. Next, I traced the inner area under the tray and cut it out. I applied the paper to the tray using spray adhesive. Then I warmed up my glue gun and glued each utensil onto the tray. Once dry, I added a pretty little ribbon. To showcase the entire piece I placed it inside the smallest jar of my apothecary set. Now the set is complete. They look beautiful sitting on a counter in my kitchen.

Addictions

Several months ago, my mother-in-law downsized to a smaller home. After her unneeded property was assigned to each child, there were still many items left. You can imagine my surprise and delight when I noticed that none of my husband's siblings were interested in taking the tarnished, mismatched silverware. So, of course, I volunteered to give it a new home.Shortly afterward, a good friend called me. She had found a great buy and wanted to share. Knowing my love/addiction to apothecary jars she asked if I wanted her to pick up a set for me. Of course my reply was YES!I'm ashamed to admit that for months both of these collections sat unattended to, even though it seemed like they were meant to be together. Finally I decided that I needed to take the necessary time to combine my two addictions.I started by dividing the silverware into "family groups." I'm not sure why I chose to start with this step other than maybe it's my obsessive/compulsive tendency. But seeing how pretty each separate grouping looked sparked an idea. I decided to tie each utensil family into a bundle using vintage looking lace. Then I piled each bundle into the medium-sized jar, arranging the groups from tallest to smallest. I adore the look of organized disorganization!I then took the remaining large serving pieces and put them into the largest jar. I added in a few thrift store finds for a more interesting display.I think my mother-in-law will be pleased that her old silverware is still being loved and my friend will be so happy that I finally decided to unpack my pretty jars.
