Best Fool

Today is a wonderful holiday, the first of April---April Fools Day. A day for playing fun practical jokes. And being the joker that I am, I wanted to play one on you. But my mind is blank, empty, containing nothing of humor. Me! The person who loves to laugh. The one who has people walk up to her in a crowded room and say, "I knew you were here because I heard your laugh." (to which I often reply, "Please tell me I don't sound like a cackling witch.")
I'm always up for a good laugh and a great joke.

But today I have nothing.

So I'll share my most memorable April Fools Day joke. It was played on me by son #1 years ago in our previous home. The boy sneaked into our master bathroom and very carefully placed those little snappers (the small twisted white paper packages that make a loud POP when they're thrown to the ground) under the toilet seat, one snapper on each of the pods of the seat. When I went into the room to sit, those little packages EXPLODED causing me to scream so loudly the neighbors would wonder. Of course immediately following the scream was the sound of laughter both inside and outside the bathroom door!My sons have tried to repeat the infamous prank, but to no avail. This momma catches on pretty quick!

Loft Room Divider

We're in the process of downsizing from a 4000 sq ft home to a 1200-sq ft loft.  Do you know,  loft living sounds more romantic than it actually is? We find that we really miss the traditional division of space. We miss having rooms.  We miss the privacy!

We've been looking into options of dividing the space.  Drapery is one, but do you have any idea how expensive a piece of fabric with four stitching is?  It's quite a mystery actually, how much drapery can cost.  The other option is to go with a company like the Sliding Door, but they are really pricey too.

We found this company, Loft Wall, today and we thought it might be a good option.  They make portable dividers that you can customize the sizing and the panels.  They are not cheap but they are not too expensive either.  You can visit the web site to download the price list.  Keep in mind that the published prices are retail, and no one pays retail!

Modern Planters

When we go to a really cool restaurant in Miami or Los Angeles we are always envious of the huge, modern planters that they have.  It's really hard to find them.  Most of the pottery places that we have in our local area sell the traditional planters.  If you have a modern home you are kinda out luck.

Anyway, we just found a great source today for huge, commercial modern planters that we thought we'd share with you.  They are so cool!  We have no idea how much they cost, sorry. But if you are interested drop us a line and we'll get pricing info for you.

An Artist's Window

Over the last few months I shared with you a few projects we built for our friends cabin. We built a hall tree out of an old door,and changed the look of their fireplace from this...to this...
Across from the fireplace is an open staircase, a perfect little spot to tuck in tables an chairs for their grandchildren. To make it even more fun we created
an art center made from an old wooden window frame. One side of the window we made a chalkboard and the other side we cut a piece of metal to fit for a magnet board.We built and attached a little window box out of cedar to hold plastic flower pots filled with oodles of art supplies.

A New Take on Restaurant Interior Design

When you enter a restaurant, one of the first things you will notice is the decor. In many cases, this particular aspect of a restaurant is as important as the food that the restaurant serves. To some, it is more important than the food. The truth is that often times, a smart decor can make up for when the food is not up to par. To that end, when it comes to restaurant interior design, no detail should be overlooked.

Any given city will likely have its fair share of Italian restaurants, Chinese inspired restaurants among many others. While the food in any of these restaurants is bound to be pretty good, and in some cases it will be out of this world, what can often hinder it from standing out among the others is the lack of original decor that is fitting of the food it offers.

That is not to say that the restaurants in question treated decor as an afterthought. The restaurants may very well have spent a large sum of money on the restaurants interior design. The problem is that too often, it is the same design you see everywhere else. Chinese restaurants trying to capture the old world look of China, Italian restaurants aiming to look like a cafe deep in the heart of Tuscany. The bottom line from a design stand point is, been there, done that, and seen it a thousand times.

Where real innovation in restaurant interior design happens is when restaurants sheds the tired way of designing and take a new approach is where things get interesting. For example, when you look at Chinese design, and especially Italian design, there is a old world side and then there is a modern side to decorating. Why not take your restaurants design in a way few do, the modern take.

How about replacing those old tired Buddha statues with a wonderful Asian inspired orchid arrangement? On the other hand, try replacing that over done Tuscan style faux finished wall treatment with some light and glossy Italian travertine tile. Get rid of those red paper shade bulb lights and bring in modern luminaries and remove that dated Italian chandelier with some brass insert pot lights.

Allowing for a radical new design on a very well used theme such as an Italian or Chinese restaurant is a good way to keep the your restaurant filled to capacity in season and out. This is not exclusive to just these restaurants either. Any sort of cuisine, from foreign to domestic can capitalize on this alternative restaurant interior design. The restaurant business is a tough one, any advantage you can find can be a game changer. Your restaurants decor could be the game changer for you.

Black and White Artwork

We usually have a really hard time finding artwork.  Mainly because we know nothing about art and when you know nothing about something you tend to be really insecure.  We suppose art is like wine, you can pretend to be a connoiseur or you can just decide you like what you like and that's that.  

It's easier that way, no?

So here are some artworks that we just picked up for our own personal loft lately.  It's a modern loft with very dark floors and white paint, so we thought we keep it simple by sticking to black and white theme.  We really like them in person. They are made professionally for commercial projects so they look really nice and expensive, even though they are quite reasonable.
